Figure Skating from the Past

I love watching figure skating on television because events such as Skate Canada and the nationals usually show moments from old competitions. While I’ve seen footage as far back as Barbara Ann Scott and Sonja Henie, I was happy to stumble on some flicks of old.

Back then, figure skating was relatively new, with jumps and spins in their infancy. With imagination, people were revolutionizing the sport. Madge Syers, Ulrich Salchow, Axel Paulsen and Sonja Henie all changed the sport with jumps, spins or rules to clear the path for the figure skaters of the future.

While the jumps and spins are primitive by today’s standards, we wouldn’t have the triple Axel if it weren’t for the waltz jump.

You just can’t stop progress!
