Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to skate on the Rideau Canal. I have on CBC video coverage of a profile on Elizabeth Manley prior to her 1988 Olympic silver medal skate. Manley glided on the canal in a full-length smoky blue jacket with fur trim – and it seemed so magical.
Today, the Rideau Canal opened in Ottawa, Ont. In Winnipeg, we have a the River Trail, which is nothing to sneeze at. A few years ago, the trail made the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest natural ice trail in the World—to my knowledge.
However, I still pine to skate on the Rideau Canal. With the carnivals, and the vendors, and performers.
