A Tribute to Barbara Ann Scott

This morning my heart literally skipped a beat.As I watched the morning news, I put my head down for a mere second to scoop up some cereal, only to hear my husband ask, did you see that? I snapped my head up just as the headline ticker passed with enough information to comprehend: Barbara Ann Scott died.Scott is the only Canadian woman to win an Olympic gold medal. In 1948, at the first Olympics held after WWII, Scott accomplished this feat – and then went on to win the 1948 world title.Scott’s resume was impressive: four-time Canadian champion, two-time North American, European and world champion, and an Olympic champion.

Medals and championships aside, though, from the out pouring of emotion Twitter, she wasn’t just a figure skater, she was an inspiration, and a  genuinely nice person.

My heat breaks over the news of the passing of Barbara Ann Scott. I loved her dearly and was my idol. My condolences to her dear husband.

And the younger generation was touched by Scott as well:

Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje@Weaver/Poje:
SO SAD to learn of Barbara Ann Scott King’s passing. What an incredible ambassador & trail blazer for Canada. RIP, you will be sorely missed.

Barbara Ann Scott will always be remembered, and not just for figure skating. Sometimes, it’s not about what you leave out on the ice that matters, it’s what you leave in people’s hearts.

  1. The loons are mournfully crying on the lake today. All of Canada is mourning the loss of our Sweetheart. I hear there is a beautiful ice rink in Heaven!
