Battle of the Blade – Rekindling old Rivalries

On last night’s episode of “Battle of the Blades,” I was shocked to find  Ekaterina “Katia” Gordeeva and Valeri Bure in the bottom two with  Violetta Afanasieva and P.J. Stock.

Gordeeva and Bure were second on the judges leader board going into the final after their dance performance, but somehow the some fans of the show didn’t appreciate it as much as some. It makes me question whether the old Russian/Canadian pairs rivalry still exists.

For decades, Russian pairs dominated the top spot of the podium, and the Canadians were usually the brides made.

Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler were perfect examples of this, and went head to head with Gordeeva and her late husband Sergei Grinkov on numerous occasions. With Brasseur in this competition, does this rekindle the same storm that existed in the 1990s?

Or, do Canadians want the winner of the competition to be Canadian – not understanding the charity that the pair is skating for, Cardiac Kids and  Compassion Canada, are, well, Canadian. Or, it’s just possible, that it was a case of the crowd didn’t like the program as much as I did.

Which is a shame.

But in the end, it didn’t matter. I’m happy to say that Gordeeva and Bure are safe for another week. Whether they win the competition remains to be scene.

As well as the trend of the pair falling into the bottom two week after week.
